Some delicate hints of bonfire embers. Vanilla emerges and a hint of peppery warmth comes to the fore. With water, there is more spice and dark chocolate, with a wee hint of sweet smoke. A wonderfully retro bottling of cult distillery Linkwood, produced by Gordon & MacPhail for their long-running Distillery Labels series. Matured for fully a quarter of a century, this is a complex and deeply flavoured whisky – we can’t be certain, but it seems to show signs of at least some Sherry maturation. The Speysider serves up notes of cinnamon, anise, ripe plums, apples, raisins, rum-like sweetness, vanilla custard, black pepper, old oak and a hit of sweet malt. Bottled without any artificial colouration, this is a superb expression of Linkwood’s spirit.
